Amanda, a divorced photographer, finds herself in a fantastic Alice-in-Wonderland experience when her daily, uninspired life literally begins to unravel, revealing the cellular, molecular and even quantum worlds which lie beneath. Guided by a Greek Chorus of leading scientists and mystics, she finds that if reality itself is not questionable, her notion of it certainly is. What the Bleep Do We Know!? est un nouveau genre de film, qui combine un documentaire, une histoire fictive et un dessin animé avec des effets visuels. Amanda (Marlee Matlin, qui a gagné un Oscar pour Children of a Lesser God), le personnage principal de l'histoire fictive, se retrouve dans un monde qui est appelé la physique quantique par les scientifiques. Des événements et des rencontres chaotiques la mènent à une connaissance plus profonde et cachée, dont elle ne savait rien. Les animations et les effets visuels dans le film soulignent que la science moderne a connu un grand progrès pendant les dernières années. Quatorze scientifiques célèbres et mystiques donnent leur vision sur la réalité et agissent dans le film comme un choeur grec qui commente ce qui se passe dans le monde 'fictif'.
