Za 2. světové války nejvyšší německé velení zřídilo speciální tábor, kam byli deportováni nejproblémovější zajatci spojeneckých armád. Velitel tábora plukovník von Luger upozorní seniora zajatých spojeneckých důstojníků kapitána Ramseye, že z tohoto tábora, který má nejtvrdší opatření proti útěku, se nikomu uniknout nepodaří. Ten však von Lugerovi připomene, že pokusit se o útěk ze zajetí je povinností každého správného důstojníka. A hned první den se tuto povinnost pokusí splnit hned několik čestných mužů. Neúspěšně. Velitel Barlett, jemuž se podařilo zorganizovat už několik útěků, proto navrhne Ramseymu neuvěřitelnou akci, při níž by z tábora zmizelo najednou dvě stě padesát zajatců. A tak se rozjedou dokonale utajené přípravy na největší útěk této války, v němž klíčovou roli hrají Američané Hendley a Hilts, Angličan Blythe, Australan Sedgwick a Polák Velinski...
