Bratři Reinhold a Günter Messnerovi si už v dětství stanovili vysoký cíl - vylézt na Nanga Parbat, přes 8000 metrů vysokou „Nahou horu“ v Himalájích. V roce 1970 je to pro tehdy 25 a 23 let staré bratry stále daleko. Pod vedením šéfa expedice Karla Marii Herrligkoffera chtěla elita mezinárodních horolezců dobýt vrchol. Výstupová cesta vedla legendární Rupálskou stěnou, nejvyšší skalní stěnou na světě. Navzdory špatné předpovědi počasí se Reinhold (Florian Stetter) rozhodl lézt sám na vrchol. Méně zkušený Günter (Andreas Tobias) následoval staršího bratra. Poté dostal výškovou nemoc a se sestupem začal boj o život.
