BBC The Man Who Cycled The Americas (2010)



The inside story of Mark Beaumont's extraordinary solo attempt to smash the Guinness World Record for cycling around the world

1/3 - North America
Scottish adventurer Mark Beaumont has already cycled around the world, so last year he decided to try cycling the 13,000 miles from Anchorage in Alaska to the bottom of Argentina. And, as an extra challenge, he decided to start and finish the expedition by climbing to the summit of the highest mountains in North and South America. For most of his journey he has no companions other than his bike and his camera (which he calls Wilson, in what's presumably a nod to the Tom Hanks film Cast Away), while he battles wind, rain, heat, isolation , fatigue and occasional run-ins with grizzly bears. Now, three hours watching a bloke on a bike may sound as much fun as mending a puncture in a thunderstorm, but of course the relentless grind of the road is alleviated by the likeable Beaumont meeting various characters, capturing some stunning landscapes and having little adventures en route.

2/3 - Central America
In the second part of his odyssey, Mark Beaumont crosses into northern Mexico, a region notorious for drugs-related killings and kidnappings. In Zacatecas, he's just in time for the Mexican Independence Day celebrations. Pushing on through Guatemala and El Salvador, Mark hits the wet season and what seems like a dead end in El Salvador. Neighbouring Honduras is under military lockdown and the ferry to Panama has sunk, but he makes a dash through Honduras with the bike in the back of a truck.

3/3 - South America
Mark Beaumont, who broke the record for pedalling around the world, is back on the road, attempting to cycle from Alaska, USA, to Ushuaia in southern Argentina; traversing the length of the Rockies and Andes, 13,000 miles through 12 countries. With 8,000 miles under his belt, the final episode sees Mark battle mentally and physically through the harsh, beautiful and imposing landscapes of South America. He faces poor roads in Ecuador, head winds in Peru and the 600-mile long Atacama Desert.
