BBC State of the Planet (2000) complete



Everywhere you turn there is confusion about the current state of our planet; with talk of rainforest destruction, global warming, extinction of species, rising sea levels and drought. In this series David Attenborough brings his matter-of-fact clarity to the subject, investigating the latest scientific research to explain the situation in simple terms for the first time.

BBC Flames Of Passion Other Side Of British Cinema



From the Second World War to the early 1960s, British movies were hugely popular with British audiences. Yet the mainstream films of these years have been dismissed by filmmakers and critics as unexciting and lacking any sense of true cinematic flair. Scottish actor Atta Yaqub, star of Ken Loach’s controversial film Ae Fond Kiss,
goes on a journey to discover the cosmopolitan city of Karachi in Pakistan.
Immersing himself in the glamorous world of supermodels and slick TV shows, he
finds his misconceptions about the country his parents came from challenged and
his opinions changed.

Arriving in the country for the first time in 20 years, Atta gets himself into
a press conference for the Lux Style Awards – Pakistan’s equivalent of the
Oscars. Befriending A-list stars, he finds a country in the grip of a
television boom.

At one of the myriad satellite stations broadcasting a diet of music, fashion,
and drama he sees how television is influencing the aspirations of modern
urbanites. To get in on the act, he tries out for a part in a top drama, but in
a toe curling audition, finds his Urdu is not up to scratch.

He meets some young men obsessed with modifying sports cars and asks what they
think of the more traditional art form of truck modification. Culture, they
say, is not interesting for them. Dazzled by the highly skilled workmanship
that goes into truck decoration, Atta begins to suspect that modern Pakistan is
out of touch with its own traditions. To investigate further, he tries his hand
at modelling. Eager to find out exactly how far girls will go when it comes to
flesh content, he meets the countrys top models. But even the most modern
Pakistanis, it seems, are not willing to bear flesh. Being modern he learns,
does not mean being western.

It does get a bit technical when it goes into the morphogenesis of plants but can still be enjoyed even without a specialist knowledge. For example Phyllotactic? (which is thrown about quite a bit) simply means arrangement of leaves?.

BBC Bulgarias Abandoned Children



As if that wasnt enough misery for one evening, Kate Blewetts Bulgarias Abandoned Children (BBC4) contained another 90 minutes of undiluted horror. Anyone familiar with the Romanian orphanage scandals of the early Nineties will have stared in shocked disbelief that nearly 20 years on precisely the same pattern of appalling cruelty and neglect is being repeated in another former Communist state. The chief difference is that Bulgaria is already a member of the European Union.

Blewetts best-known film The Dying Rooms exposed the systematic neglect unto death policies operated in Chinese orphanages. Here she filmed for nine months at a social care home for physically and mentally disabled children in northern Bulgaria.

It is no exaggeration to say that most domestic animals are treated better than these unfortunate boys and girls, who get little treatment and no education or stimulation, and are condemned to rock silently and slowly waste away in body and mind. At times it was impossible to believe the cynicism of the staff. At others, it was impossible not to turn away from the pain and suffering on display. Nothing on television this year has brought me closer to tears.

BBC Jerry Building Unholy Relics of Nazi Germany (1994)




Using Berlin as his starting point, writer and presenter Jonathan Meades goes in search of the architectural relics of the genocidal Third Reich, which was steeped in mysticism and pagan death cults.

These include a model village for SS Doctors, Himmler's Castle at a crossing of ley lines and a seaside utopia for 20,000 of the master race. He shows that far from Nazi Germany having existed in a void, it left a regrettable architectural legacy for the rest of post war Europe.

Ken Campbell was a hugely respected maverick of the British theatre, an eccentric genius who
would snort out forgotten artforms. Nina was his prodigy in ventriloquism and has been said to
have reinvented the artform. This film is truly unique in genre and style. No one has seen
ventriloquism like this before.

Nina Conti's funny, highly original and poignant documentary, takes us on two journeys. A
personal journey, and a professional one, through the strange, surprising and often hilarious
world of ventriloquism. When Nina was just another twenty-something wannabe actress, Ken
presented her with a teach-yourself ventriloquism kit. This set her on a path to becoming a
sell-out act in Britain and abroad, with a clutch of major awards.

On the road, Nina brings all the puppets to life as struggles to meet the conflicting demands
of her old acerbic partner Monkey, and the new characters she has been bequeathed. But one
puppet remains silent. Ken's doll of himself sits mournful and judgemental in the hotel
bedroom. Nina cannot find her master's voice and until she does, she will not be able to lay
her old life to rest.

BBC Tourettes I Swear I Cant Help It



In 1988, teenager John Davidson featured in a BBC documentary about Tourettes. At that time, few people had even heard of Tourettes Syndrome, let alone knew anything about the neurological condition which, at its worst, causes violent body movements and outbursts of swearing. John was 16, and trying to come to terms with a frightening world where his language and behaviour was a constant form of offence to everyone around him. In 2002, he took part in a follow-up film alongside 8-year-old Greg Storey, who had recently been diagnosed with Tourettes. Now, seven years on, this film revisits both John (aged 37) and Greg (aged 15), and sees how their worlds have changed. Greg is now the same age as John was when he first took part in a documentary. How does Greg's experience of being a teenager with Tourettes compare to John's, and how does John's life continue to change?
