BBC Titanic with Len Goodman (2012)



Dance judge Len Goodman discovers how the impact of the Titanic disaster is still felt a century after the ship sank. Len has his own connection to the ship; before he was a dancer, he was a welder for Harland and Wolff.
This was the company that, from 1909 to1912, built the Titanic in Belfast. Len worked for the same company fifty years later, at their yard in east London. To mark the centenary of the Titanic tragedy in 2012, Len explores the ship's one hundred year legacy. He learns how for victims' families, and for the survivors themselves, the sinking was just the beginning of the
story. Generations later, those stories are still unfolding as Len meets the modern-day descendants to learn how, 100 years after it sank, the Titanic's legacy lives on.

Len returns to Belfast to discover how eight men helped build the Titanic, sailed on her, and finally died on her. He brings their stories to life as he explores the very building, now derelict, where they once worked.

In London, he meets the man whose great uncle survived the tragedy, only to pay for his life with his reputation. Len learns how, even 100 years on, Titanic still sometimes casts a shadow over the family.

And Len helps two Titanic historians uncover the life of a stewardess who survived the disaster, only to disappear afterwards. Her story leads them to a modern Belfast family who until now, had no idea they had a Titanic connection

In the final episode of the series, Len explores Titanic's legacy. He discovers how the press created heroes and went looking for villains, and discovers how the disaster changed sea travel forever.
Len discovers what life was like for crew on board Titanic, through the memoirs of one of the stewardesses on board. And on order to get a sense of what Titanic was really like, he takes a snoop around her modern counterpart, the Queen Mary 2. Just like Titanic a century ago, this is now the largest cruise liner in the world.

Len learns how, in the struggle to put the disaster behind them, the family of the man who owned Titanic did its best to forget all about their connection to the ship. Through the stories of two Irish brothers in steerage, Len discovers that, on Titanic, having money could save your life, and reveals the statistics that show that price of your ticket reflected the value of your life.

Len finds out how a respectable sea captain who was blamed for the deaths of all on board Titanic was still fighting to clear his name right up to his death in the 1960s. Unfortunately, the key piece of evidence to clear his name was not discovered until 1985; it was the wreck of the ship.

Len discovers how the Titanic disaster changed sea travel for ever. A new, international convention was introduced to make travelling at sea safe and fair for, all regardless of class. Len speaks to the modern sea captain who, today, follows these laws to the letter.

Len wraps up by offering his take on what makes the Titanic story special - and why it's one that still fascinates today.

BBC Around The World In 20 Years with Michael Palin (2010)


Michael Palin sets out to find the Indian sailors who took him on a slow boat from Dubai to Mumbai 20 years ago during the filming of his first travelogue Around the World in 80 Days. During an intense week at sea in 1988, he and the film crew learned to admire and respect the underpaid deckhands of the dhow Al Shama in whose hands they had placed themselves, and their farewell was a memorably emotional occasion. The return visit offers a chance to see how the teeming city has developed in the Asian economic boom and discover whether the ancient sailing ship is still afloat.

From teenagers drinking in their bedrooms to grannies on a boozy trip, she hears people's embarrassing drunken secrets and sees how some women want to grow old disgracefully, as well as looking at why drunk women get such bad press.
