Unemployment reached 2 million in 1980, and British Leyland launch the Mini Metro.

Philips released the Compact Disc player and an ice hockey player developed Roller Blades.

Sixpence pieces ceased to be legal tender after 30th June and three greats of the screen, Peter Sellers, Alfred Hitchcock and Steve McQueen died.

The film investigates the case against her husband Shrien, currently fighting in UK courts to avoid extradition to South Africa to stand trial for murder, and includes CCTV footage that suggests a different side to the couple than the one that has so far been portrayed.

Grace presents Edinburgh Festival Stories in conjunction with Rosalind and Bradley, all members of Strange Town Youth Theatre. Over the course of a month, from a base at the Out of the Blue Drill Hall in Leith, they filmed various productions. As well as getting backstage insights, they also talked to the people on the streets to see what they thought of the festival, nabbing an interview with Irvine Welsh into the bargain.

Phil Agland revisits the Baka Pygmy family he filmed 25 years ago in his Bafta-winning documentary
Baka – People Of The Rainforest.

He explores how life has changed for the new generation: the children of the old film are now
parents; Camera, who was born at the end of the first film and named after Phil’s film camera, now
has a seven-year-old daughter, Ambi. Camera’s brother Ali also has a young daughter, who is
disabled.

For the first time the Baka watch themselves in the original film on a huge screen in the forest.
Seeing how their parents used to live prompts an epic journey deep into the forest to rediscover
the old life of their fathers. The story that unfolds is a tragic one of a family caught helplessly
between the world of the forest and the outside world that rejects them. But it is also a story of
redemption inspired by the children, especially Ambi, who attends school for the first time.

BBC The American Future A History



Simon Schama travels through America to dig deep into the conflicts of its history as a way to understand the country's contemporary political situation. He explores how American optimism about the infinite possibilities of its land and resources is in danger of coming to a grinding halt. Nowhere is it more evident than in the American West, which has always been a symbol of opportunity and freedom. Oil at four dollars a gallon may dominate the headlines, but here it is the lack of water that is an bigger threat to the American future. The West is in the grip of a years-long drought.

America's optimism about its natural resources has always been spiced with clashes over conservation, going back to the first man to navigate the Colorado river, John Wesley Powell. American ingenuity made farming on an industrial scale possible in the early years of the 20th century, but at the cost of making Oklahoma a dust bowl. The Hoover Dam, a modern American miracle which used to provide essential irrigation for farming and for the new city of Las Vegas, is not able to cope with the demand for water any more.
