BBC Future of Food (2009) Xvid | 704x400 | AC3 | 256kb/s | Each Part~59mins | PArt~746MB Future of Food In the past year, we have seen food riots on three continents, food inflation has rocketed and experts predict that by 2050, if things dont change, we will see mass starvation across the world. This film sees George Alagiah travel the world in search of solutions to the growing global food crisis. From the two women working to make their Yorkshire market town self-sufficient to the academic who claims it could be better for the environment to ship in lamb from New Zealand, George Alagiah meets the people who believe they know how we should feed the world as demand doubles by the middle of the century. Part 1: India George joins a Masai chief among the skeletons of hundreds of cattle he has lost to climate change and the English farmer who tells him why food production in the UK is also hit. He spends a day eating with a family in Cuba to find out how a future oil shock could lead to dramatic adjustments to diets. He visits the breadbasket of India to meet the farmer who now struggles to irrigate his land as water tables drop, and finds out why obesity is spiralling out of control in Mexico. Back in Britain, George investigates what is wrong with peoples diets, and discovers that the UK imports an average of 3000 litres of water per capita every day. He talks to top nutritionist Susan Jebb, DEFRA minister Hilary Benn and Nobel laureate Rajendra Pachauri to uncover what the future holds for our food. Part 2: Senegal George heads out to India to discover how a changing diet in the developing world is putting pressure on the worlds limited food resources. He finds out how using crops to produce fuel is impacting on food supplies across the continents. George then meets a farmer in Kent, who is struggling to sell his fruit at a profit, and a British farmer in Kenya who is shipping out tonnes of vegetables for our supermarket shelves. He also examines why so many people are still dying of hunger after decades of food aid. Back in the UK, George challenges the decision-makers with the facts he has uncovered from Oxfam head of research Duncan Green to Sainsburys boss Justin King. He finds out why British beef may offer a model for future meat production and how our appetite for fish is stripping the world’s seas bare. Part 3: Cuba In the final episode George Alagiah heads out to Havana to find out how they are growing half of their fruit and vegetables right in the heart of the city, investigates the ‘land-grabs’ trend where rich countries lease or buy up the land used by poor farmers in Africa – and meets the Indian agriculturalists who have almost trebled their yields over the course of a decade. George finds out how we in this country are using cutting-edge science to extend the seasons recycle our food waste and even grow lettuce in fish tanks to guarantee the food on our plates. He hears the arguments about genetically modified food and examines even more futuristic schemes to get the food on to our plates. Sample Screens

357 BBC Einsteins Universe (1979)
BBC Einsteins Universe (1979) MPG | 640x480 | Runtime: 118min | 1.32GB This highly informative and educational two hour BBC program was written and conceived by Nigel Calder, author of several books on science, including Einsteins Universe, upon which this program is based. It is hosted by Peter Ustinov, who serves both as our guide to understanding Einsteins theories and speaks Einsteins words to make his presence felt throughout the program. Ustinov becomes educated in Einsteins theories by many of the best minds in science, who provide demonstrations to illustrate his teachings. These include experiments to help understand gravity, warped space, how light responds to gravity, the Doppler effect and how radio waves, as used in police radar, are an unbeatable way of measuring speed. From these simpler experiments much larger concepts are drawn, such as the discovery of a Binary Pulsar, the nature of black holes and how they are created, and the ultimate theory of how the universe was formed. Other demonstrations measure the speed of light, how time passes more slowly for people traveling in an airplane, the incredible accuracy of the Atomic Clock in Washington, DC and how time itself would appear to stop at the surface of a black hole. The conclusion of the program portrays Einstein as a great humanitarian. Although known as the father of the Atomic Bomb his greatest concern was for the potentially devastating effects splitting the atom could have on the future of mankind. His famous letter to President Franklin Roosevelt warned that although the splitting of the atom to detonate an atomic bomb could be used to end World War II, it could also potentially be used for far more deadly ends. This last thought is the subject of another Nigel Calder book, Nuclear Nightmares, and a second BBC program to explore this subject in more depth. 358 BBC Christina A Medieval Life (2008) Michael Wood
BBC Christina A Medieval Life (2008) Michael Wood TVRip | XVID 608x352 25fps 959Kbps | MP3 48000Hz stereo 126Kbps | 465 Mb | 59:11 min Historian Michael Wood delves through medieval court records to follow the fortunes of a village in Hertfordshire and, more particularly, the family of peasant Christina Cok, her father Hugh, estranged husband William, and her children John and Alice. The 14th century was a perilous time in British history, shot through with famine, plague and war. It was a time of climate change, virulent cattle diseases and the Black Death. But it was also the time when modern mentalities were shaped, not just by the rulers but increasingly by the common people. It was the beginning of the end of serfdom, the growth of individual freedom and the start of a capitalist market economy. This is an everyday story of a medieval country family which illustrates the bigger picture of how the character and destiny of ordinary British people was being shaped. It is history told not from the top of society but from the bottom and especially through the eyes of the forgotten half of the workforce, women. 362 BBC Chemistry A Volatile History [Complete Set] (2010)
BBC Chemistry A Volatile History [Complete Set] (2010) XviD | 640 x 352 | Runtime: 3x59min | 3x466MB Discovering the Elements The explosive story of chemistry is the story of the building blocks that make up our entire world the elements. From fiery phosphorous to the pure untarnished lustre of gold and the dazzle of violent, violet potassium, everything is made of elements. Yet for centuries this world was largely unknown, and completely misunderstood. In this three-part series, professor of theoretical physics Jim Al-Khalili traces the extraordinary story of how the elements were discovered and mapped. He follows in the footsteps of the pioneers who cracked their secrets and created a new science, propelling us into the modern age. Just 92 elements made up the world, but the belief that were only four earth, fire, air and water persisted until the 19th Century. Professor Al-Khalili retraces the footsteps of the alchemists who first began to question the notion of the elements in their search for the secret of everlasting life. He reveals the red herrings and rivalries which dogged scientific progress, and explores how new approaches to splitting matter brought us both remarkable elements and the new science of chemistry. The Order of the Elements The explosive story of chemistry is the story of the building blocks that make up our entire world the elements. In part two, Professor Al-Khalili looks at the 19th century chemists who struggled to impose an order on the apparently random world of the elements. From working out how many there were to discovering their unique relationships with each other, the early scientists bid to decode the hidden order of the elements was driven by false starts and bitter disputes. But ultimately the quest would lead to one of chemistrys most beautiful intellectual creations: the periodic table. The Power of the Elements The explosive story of chemistry is the story of the building blocks that make up our entire world the elements. In the final part, Professor Al-Khalili uncovers tales of success and heartache in the story of chemists battle to control and combine the elements, and build our modern world. He reveals the dramatic breakthroughs which harnessed their might to release almost unimaginable power, and he journeys to the centre of modern-day alchemy, where scientists are attempting to command the extreme forces of nature and create brand new elements. 364 BBC 100 Years Of Girl Guides (2009)
BBC 100 Years Of Girl Guides (2009) In September 2009, the Girl Guides celebrated their centenary. With a membership of over 600000, nearly half the female population of Britain has been involved with the Brownies and Girl Guides at some time during their lives. Throughout its history, the movement has given girls the opportunity to have fun and form life-long friendships. Narrated by Dominic West (The Wire), 100 Years of the Girl Guides delves into the movements extraordinary archive and interviews a host of former Girl Guides from veterans to such household names as Kelly Holmes, Clare Short, Kate Silverton and Rhona Cameron. In 1909, Robert Baden-Powell agreed to let girls have their equivalent of the Boy Scouts. It was a time when women couldnt vote, couldnt work once married, couldnt borrow money or seek contraception. The Guides have always risen to the challenge in times of national crisis. During the First World War, they worked in munitions factories and in the Second World War, young women in the Guides International Service worked alongside British soldiers to help Jewish inmates liberated from Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. The Guides progressive vision has pioneered the change in attitudes over disability. Their inclusive approach has produced many successful sportswomen including Kelly Holmes and paralympians Barbara Howie and Tanni Grey-Thompson. The Girl Guides would not be the Girl Guides without their camping adventures. Baden Powell believed the great outdoors was the best way for the youth of the day to stay healthy and sane. At the heart of the Girl Guides ethos lies their commitment to helping others and being a good citizen. 365 BBC Wine (Complete)
BBC Wine (Complete) XviD | 640 x 352 | Runtime: 2hr 56min | 1.36GB Episode 1: The Firm (16th February 2009) This episode takes a look behind the scenes at Berry Brothers and Rudd, the oldest and poshest wine merchant in the world. After 310 years of business there is still a Mr. Berry at the helm as bombs, wars, kings and queens have come and gone, but this charmed existence may be under threat as the credit crunch bites deep. The film unwittingly becomes a chronicle of the changing world order, where the super-rich look alarmingly as though they are about to turn into the ancient regime. Quaint anachronism it might seem from the outside, but this is the firm that turned fine wine into the sine qua non of the super-rich. Everyone here, from Berrys larger-than-life Bordeaux and Burgundy buyers to the eccentric and ambitious chateau owners and producers they do business with, services what seemed to be the ever-increasing demand for the finest wines available to humanity, until the rot creeps in and threatens three centuries of history. Episode 2: The Faith (23rd February 2009) This episode charts the creation of the 2008 vintage at Margaux, arguably the worlds greatest wine estate. Corinne Mentzelopoulos, daughter of a Greek supermarket tycoon, introduces us to the chateau her family has owned for the past 30 years, as everyone from vineyard worker to chief winemaker looks anxiously at a sky which appears hell-bent on making the year a wretched one. One bottle of this cult wine can cost up to ?1,000 a bottle if the vintage is good, but the quality of the vintage is always in the lap of the weather gods. Blessed by sunshine and a soaring economy in previous years, Margaux has turned itself into the worlds luxury wine. From the inside, we track the meticulous cultivation of a top-notch brand, with Margauxs urbane director Paul Pontallier serving the role of chief evangelist as we follow him all the way to China where he is almost mobbed by devotees of Margaux. Episode 3: The Future (2nd March 2009) The final episode looks at the importance of the industry to South Africas future and why, despite a history that stretches back to the 17th century, it still hasnt decided what its identity should be. Oupa Rangaka and Mark Solms are two unlikely wine producers. Six years ago, Oupa, a retired philosophy professor, didnt even drink wine, let alone make it. Today he and his family, including three-year-old grandson Kwena, are the only black people to own a vineyard in South Africa. Its survival depends on their ongoing relationship with Marks and Spencer and convincing the judges at Londons International Wine Challenge that their pinotage passes muster. Mark is a world-renowned neuroscientist who inherited the family business, and is struggling to reconcile his idealistic plans for the farm with the practical realities of post-apartheid South Africa. He worries that the harvest festival he is organising may degenerate into an orgy of violence and drunkenness. Via the struggles of these two remarkable men, wine becomes a prism through which to view the current state of the Rainbow Nation. 367 BBC Lost Libraries of Timbuktu (2009)
BBC Lost Libraries of Timbuktu (2009) XviD | 624x352 | Runtime: 59min | 490MB South of the Sahara, the West African city stands for all that is remote and obscure. But, as Aminatta Fornas rewarding film shows, Timbuktu was once one of the great cities of the world. This is a fine history-travelogue that starts slowly, meandering through the mud-brick buildings. It reveals a city that prized literature and learning, and even now possesses thousands of ancient Arabic manuscripts. Forna tells us how we need to re-assess what we think we know about Africa. Her film is not polished or glossy, but peppers its narrative with city sights and, most of all, people. A calligrapher reflects that, in the 16th century, his craft would have made him a millionaire, but now hes the only Arabic scribe in town, and hes poor. Maybe his fortunes will revive if the city can make the most of its status as the keeper of Africas literary heritage. 368 BBC Obamas America (2010)
BBC Obamas America (2010) XviD | 624x352 | Runtime: 59minx2 | 490x2MB 1/2 The Price of Freedom A year on from Barack Obamas inauguration, Simon Schama examines the issue that more than any other will determine the fate of his presidency: Afghanistan. Its a war which Obama inherited but which he has pledged to continue fighting a conflict that will cost many more American and British lives. As Simon Schama explains, it wasnt just a political miscalculation which landed the US and its allies in military crisis, but a historical miscalculation a refusal to learn from the conflicts of the past. By committing America and its allies to wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, George Bush and the neocons allowed the battle against the Taliban to slide. The neocons were obsessed with World War Two, and persuaded themselves that both wars would like the Second World War be glorious liberations; decisive military victories. However, as Schama discovers, its not to World War II, but to Americas forgotten war in Korea, that US policymakers should have looked if they wanted to understand the thorny reality of Americas twentieth-century conflicts. The president who took America into Korea was Harry Truman. As Simon Schama explains, in Trumans handling of this bloody war, and in his statesmanship at a time of international crisis, there are profound lessons for Obama today. 2/2 The End of the Dream? In the second of two films to mark the anniversary of Barack Obamas inauguration, Simon Schama asks what has happened to the fabled American Dream the promise of prosperity for all. At the start of 2009, Obama took office in the midst of an economic and financial crisis unparalleled since the Great Depression. One of his key election pledges was to make the American money machine work for everyone. To many, the United States is synonymous with freebooting capitalism, but, as Schama discovers, since the birth of the republic theres been confusion over the role of banks. Are they the creators or the destroyers of the American Dream? President Obama now finds himself confronting what is not just a historical but also a political dilemma. Will he act decisively to rein in Wall Street and end the cycle of boom and bust which has destroyed the lives of ordinary Americans, or is he too timid to tamper with the goose which lays golden eggs? Its a question which will determine whether the President is a political radical or a cautious pragmatist, and how he responds will shape America and the face of capitalism for years to come. 369 BBC Trials Of Life (Complete)
BBC Trials Of Life (Complete) XviD | MP3 | PArt~746MB The Trials of Life: A Natural History of Behaviour is a BBC nature documentary series written and presented by David Attenborough, first transmitted in the UK from 4 October 1990. A study in animal behaviour, it was the third in a trilogy of major series (beginning with Life on Earth) that took a broad overview of nature, rather than the more specialised surveys of Attenboroughs later productions. Each of the twelve 50-minute episodes features a different aspect of the journey through life, from birth to adulthood and continuation of the species through reproduction. The series was produced in conjunction with the Australian Broadcasting Service and Turner Broadcasting System Inc. The executive producer was Peter Jones and the music was composed by George Fenton.
