Part 3: The Spark of Life

The final part reveals how our knowledge of cells has brought us to the brink of one of the most important moments in history. Scientists are close to repeating what has happened only once in four billion years the creation of a new life form.

We will never know how many people were victims of communism between the October Revolution of 1917 and Stalins death in March 1953. Some historians say 20 million died, others 50 million.

Millions more worked as slaves in the Gulag, the system of mines, factories and building sites which lay at the heart of the great Soviet drive for industrialisation.

Angus Macqueens epic documentary, Gulag, spanning three hours, is a huge undertaking by the BBC, dedicating a whole evening to the infamous Gulag and its effect on Russia. Considerably more people died as a result of Stalins Gulag than under Hitler and the film casts a new light on this terrible era in Russias recent history; also yielding amazing glimpses of contemporary Russian life and characters.

Gulag is a journey from a canal on the outskirts of Moscow to the deserts of central Asia and the snowy wastes of the Arctic via the heart of Russian society and history. It is not simply a story of repression but an exploration of the way the camp system stands as a metaphor for Soviet Russia for the camps combined repression with a huge economic purpose, lying at the heart of Stalins plans to industrialise.

Gulag is tragedy on a harrowing scale. The stories of a nightmare world, told in the words of both victims and perpetrators, continue to haunt todays society. Slave labour built the Russian Parliament and half of Moscow. The legendary Volga Canal was built by the Gulag and if people died during their work then they would be thrown in with the cement.

International investigative documentary series. When a tsunami struck Japan in
2011, it swamped the Fukushima nuclear complex causing nuclear meltdown and
releasing radioactivity that ultimately would leave hundreds of square miles
uninhabitable, and cost a hundred thousand people their homes.

With unique footage and powerful eyewitness testimony from key figures in the
drama - the engineers in the plant, firemen, soldiers, pilots, tsunami
survivors, the Japanese prime minister and even the MD of the company operating
the plant - Inside the Meltdown reveals what really happened in the
extraordinary days after the tsunami as a disaster unfolded that Japan's
nuclear industry said would never happen.

It tells the story of workers inside the plant's pitch-dark, radio-active
reactor buildings desperately trying to stop reactors exploding as radiation
levels rose inexorably. 'In the control room people were saying we were
finished,' says one. 'They were saying it quietly but they were saying it.' It
meets the helicopter pilots who desperately dropped water from above the
radioactive cores, and the firemen who braved radiation to spray water onto
melting nuclear fuel. 'We chose all the over 40s', their chief tells the
programme. 'These were the guys who were not going to be having any more
children.'

Inside the Meltdown also reveals the tensions between the plant's owners and an
increasingly distrustful Japanese prime minister, struggling to get at the
truth of what was happening, fearful the owners planned to abandon the plant.
e reveals his experts at one point warned he might need to evacuate vast areas
of Japan, even the capital Tokyo. 'That first week, we walked a razor
thinline,' he tells This World.

1. Out of the Forest



He explores the origins of the Russian icon from its roots in Byzantium and the first great Russian icon, Our Lady of Vladimir to the masterpieces of the countrys most famous icon painter, Andrei Rublev.

Both epic and awe-inspiring, and producing brilliant art, nevertheless medieval Russia could be a terrifying place. Criss-crossing the epic landscape, Andrew visits the monastery founded by Ivan the Terrible, where his favourite forms of torture found inspiration in religious art.

One man would shine a light into Russias darkages Peter the Great who, surprisingly, took as his inspiration Deptford in South London.

2. Roads to Revolution



He explores how Russia changed from a feudal nation of aristocratic excess to a hotbed of revolution at the beginning of the 20th century and how art moved from being a servant of the state to an agent of its destruction.

From monuments that celebrate the absolutism of the tsars to the epic Russian landscape as inspiration; from the design and construction of gold and glittering palaces to the minutiae of diamond-encrusted Faberg eggs; and eventually to the stark and radical paintings of the avant-garde, the journey through Russian art history is one of extraordinary beauty and surprise.

3. Smashing the Mould



The final part examines political revolution and how art was at the forefront of throwing out 1,000 years of royal rule, from its earliest revolutionary days of enthusiasm and optimism when painting died, the poster was king and the machine-made triumphed over the handmade to the dead hand of Socialist Realism.

Andrew roots out great portraits of Stalin now hidden in museum storerooms and never on public view, looks at the transformation of the Moscow metro into a great public art gallery and visits the most stunning creation of post-war Communist rule, the Space Monument.

Finally, he comes to the confusion and chaos of Russia today and how it is producing some of the worlds strangest art from heroic sculptures of Russian leader Vladimir Putin to the insides of a giant erotic apple; from the recreation of the Imperial royal family facing the firing squad to sculpture in liquid oil; from Russias embrace of the commercial art market to a return to Socialist Realism. Russia seems to stand on another brink of revolution.

The BBC gives over a whole evening to an 'investigation into the supernatural'. Four respected presenters and a camera crew attempt to discover the truth behind 'The most haunted house in Britain', expecting a light-hearted scare or two and probably the uncovering of a hoax. They think they are in control of the situation. They think they are safe. The viewers settle down and decide to watch 'for a laugh'. Ninety minutes later the BBC, and the country, was changed, and the consequences are still felt today.

BBC Look Around You (2007) complete



Look Around You is a spoof science programme that hilariously recreates both the drab, depressing air of 1970s educational television and a bygone world of tedious school science lessons. Each of the 10-minute episodes�or �Modules��takes the form of a number of surreal and pointless experiments based on a chosen theme ranging from �Water� and �Sulphur� to �Ghosts� and �Brains�.
Look Around You�s humour lies not only in an absurd take on education and the impenetrable jargon of science, but also in evoking a sense of nostalgia in the viewer. In this respect the series is helped immeasurably by faultless production and attention to detail. Narrated in austere, Queen�s English, using precise scientific terminology, this is a world of scratched film inserts, dubious periodic tables, cheap, synthesised music, giant hairstyles, bulky, teak-finished technology and a proliferation of DYMO labels. Each show is even prefaced by a few seconds of the �Television for Schools & Colleges� countdown clock. The tutorial format of the series is not without its problems though�it is essentially a single, plotless joke stretched to eight episodes, and there are no characters to speak of, save glimpses of the deadpan and much-maligned lab-technician (cowriter Peter Serafanowicz). Despite these shortcomings Look Around You is still a refreshingly different comedy, which is so well put together that you can almost smell the Bunsen burners while you watch.
In the first series, the episodes (�modules�) pay homage to late 1970s and early 1980s educational films and schools programmes such as ITV�s �Experiment� series, which were re-run for many years after they were made. A different scientific subject is covered in each episode.

From The Guardian:

One of my favourite films of recent years is Spellbound, a documentary that follows the young competitors in an American spelling bee. Beautiful Young Minds (BBC2, Sunday) does for numbers what Spellbound did for letters. It's another wonderful film, my number one television documentary of the year.

Ah, but what do I mean by number one? Do I mean the ordinal one, or do I mean the non-negative integer one, the rational number one, the real number one, or the complex number one ... ?

Actually, I have no idea. Maths was never my 40. At least in Spellbound I could see that logorrhoea could be spelled like that, even if I had no idea what it meant. But this might as well be Chinese. It doesn't matter, though, because of course it's really about the people behind the numbers.

We're with a group of young mathematicians, all hoping to represent Britain at the International Mathematical Olympiad 2006 in Slovenia. It's a brutal process of maths camps and elimination tests, of waiting for the email that tells you whether you're through to the next round of camps and tests.

These kids obviously have a hard time at their schools, they don't fit in, they're considered freaks and geeks. But here they're all together, suddenly it's normal to think about maths the whole time. And it's lovely to see. The freak is film-maker Morgan Matthews, who keeps asking them about their feelings and emotions. What can he mean?

Some are on the autism spectrum, others don't know, and when Daniel is diagnosed with Asperger's on camera, he appears quite pleased. They have different levels of self awareness and varying abilities to get on with others. Poor Jos can't seem to get on with anyone, not even other maths geniuses. He's autistic, as well as suffering from bad logorrhoea, which is what seems to annoy the others. But he doesn't look like he's too fussed. Being fussed is irrational, and so is not something he's interested in.

Oliver is more aware of how others see them. "I don't think anyone here helps their image as such," he says at the winter maths camp in Hungary. "No one is trying to improve their coefficient of humanity and normalness ... although of course I am now sounding rather odd. I do regret saying that."

Perhaps Oliver's self-awareness is related to the fact that he's not actually as good at maths as the others. This is as far as he gets.

It must be hard making a film like this; knowing who to focus on, when there are people falling by the wayside all the time. We lose several interesting characters along the way. None of the girls gets very far. Unhappy Saul goes. Cong, the ethnically Chinese boy who hates everything about the Chinese, is eliminated. But Daniel, who's English but loves everything about the Chinese and China (he learnt fluent Mandarin in three months while travelling there, and is engaged to Zhu Yan even though he's only 17) gets through.

And Jos keeps on making the cut, as he expects to. Until the last hurdle where he falls, failing to make the final six who will go to the Olympiad. "Nobody wants to be upset, so I'm going to try to make sure that I'm not going to be," he says, looking upset.

But Daniel goes to Slovenia, and wins a silver medal, though he's too shy to go up on stage to collect it. Overall, the Chinese team wins by about infinity, with six gold medals and one perfect score. Cong, who's probably watching the results on the internet at home, won't like that. But Daniel will be pleased, victory for the people he feels most comfortable with. He celebrates his own silver by marrying Zhu Yan. He may even be 18 now.

There's nothing judgmental or mocking about Morgan Matthews' film. He does a bit of prodding, asking questions from behind the camera. But that's mainly like trying to pick enormous padlocks with a paperclip. When he asks a previous winner what it feels like to get a gold medal, he gets a nervous giggle, followed by: "That's probably a bit difficult, I'm not very good at describing feelings in words."

Mostly, then, it's purely observational, fly-on-a-blackboard, painstakingly filmed over several months, in several countries. And the result is, as Spellbound was, a lovely film about extraordinary people.

the beginning of the 19th century you could still be hanged in Britain for offences such as
stealing a sheep or shooting a rabbit. Even children as young as seven were sent to the gallows.
The last hanging in this country took place as recently as 1964.

By opting for a dispassionate history rather than staging the usual polarised debate, the
programme breaks new ground with its fascinating attention to detail, such as the protocols of
the public execution or the 'science' of hanging. With contributions from both sides of the
argument, it provides an essential guide to a subject that still divides us.

Tree surgeon-turned-filmmaker Robb Leech is an ordinary white middle-class boy from the Dorset
seaside town of Weymouth. So too is his stepbrother Rich, but a little over a year ago Rich
became a radical Islamist who now goes by the name of Salahuddin. He associates with jihadist
fundamentalists and believes the UK should be ruled by Sharia law.

In a film that took over twelve months to shoot, Robb sets out to reconnect with his extremist
stepbrother and find clues to what led Rich to become Salahuddin. It charts the brothers'
relationship and Robb's attempt to understand why the person he'd once looked up to as a teenage
role model could so strongly reject all that his family and the Western world believe in. As
Robb spends time with Salahuddin, he witnesses a very particular phenomenon - the embrace of
radical Islamism by young men, many of them white.

Robb first heard of Rich's conversion in a national newspaper in the summer of 2009. The article
said Rich had converted under Anjem Choudary, leader of the radical Muslim group Islam4UK (later
banned under Britain's anti-terror laws). Robb was horrified by the things his stepbrother was
telling him - that under Sharia law, women should be stoned to death for committing adultery,
that he was prepared to die for Islam and that as a non-believer, Robb was going to hell. Just
the previous summer the two brothers had shared a room on holiday in Cyprus and been practically
inseparable. Robb began filming what was happening to Rich to try to understand why it had
happened and what the world was like that Rich had chosen.

BBC Storyville In Search of Gandhi (2008)



Documentary in which Indian filmmaker Lalit Vachani retreads the route taken in the 1920s by Mahatma Gandhi as he led a march that was to change India�s destiny. His famous Salt March saw him walk 240 miles to Dandi in Gujurat, where he broke the British ban on Indians making salt and started the slow journey to independence.
