Absolutní outsider Sean Boswell (Lucas Black) vidí v nelegálních automobilových závodech jediný způsob jako utéct před tíživou realitou
světa sešněrovaného konvencemi a nesmyslnými zákazy. Tím si ovšem proti sobě poštve řadu oficiálních autorit, které ho po jednom velmi nepříjemném karambolu chtějí poslat do vězení. Aby se Sean této nepříjemnosti vyhnul, odjíždí do Tokia žít ke svému příbuznému. Jenže tady se cítí ještě hůř, protože mu tu cbybí jeho největší koníček. Pak ale pronikne do světa drifterů, vyznavačů speciální automobilové disciplíny, kterou charakterizuje kouř z pálících se pneumatik, a nálada a problémy..
