Pohlednou, ale chladnou blondýnku z lepší rodiny Melanii zaujme v obchodě s ptáky mladý advokát Mitch. Rozjede se tedy za ním do města Bodega Bay. Na loďce ji však napadne racek. Neklade se tomu pozornost. Ptáci se však začnou chovat stále divněji. Vše vyvrcholí, když hejno ptáků napadne školu, zabije farmáře a způsobí výbuch benzinky. Hitchcock použil ve filmu přes 350 trikových záběrů. Díky velké reklamní kampani se Ptáci staly nejůspěšnějším filmem roku 1963.
